“Bohemian Rhapsody”, the biopic of Freddie Mercury and the band Queen, took the big prize of Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Drama) at this years Golden Globes. It was definitely an unexpected winner by beating out highly critically acclaimed movies such as “A Star is Born” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” “Bohemian Rhapsody” went into the awards show with a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, so it was “Certified Fresh,” but definitely a mixed response. Nonetheless, the audience such as myself saw the movie and responded by it in a more positive way. It was good, enjoyable, and fun movie. It made me appreciate Queen much more than I ever have before. The performances and the direction hit some high notes. Definitely, the performance from Rami Malek, who played Freddy Mercury, should be praised.
Though, the Golden Globes do offer a better show than the Oscars, the Oscars usually award the better winners. That is not to disrespect “Bohemian Rhapsody” and especially Rami Malek in any way. However, there were many good movies this past year like the ones mentioned above, but also “A Quiet Place” which was not even nominated at the Golden Globes. Even though, its Golden Globes best picture win may fuel some fire into its consideration at the Academy Awards, there is still an extremely high possibility that will not even be nominated. Many people are predicting either “A Quiet Place” or “A Star is Born” will win this years Oscars.
There may not be a chance for the film to win Best Picture at the Oscars, but there is an argument for Malek to win out for Best Actor. His performance was definitely the most talked about of the film. Though, was his performance the best of the year? Was it better than performances from Bradly Cooper (“A Star is Born”), Ethan Hawke (“First Reformed”), or Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”). That is tough to answer, but I would say no, Malek’s performance was not the best. Therefore, do not expect “Bohemian Rhapsody” to be called out much at the Academy Awards.
