Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’ premiered this past weekend and is instantly being talked about for the best reasons. This show, starring Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey, and Ncuti Gatwa, is incredibly refreshing and charming. It focuses on Butterfield’s character, Otis, who is a high school student, sixteen years old and does not think he knows the answers to life. His mother, Jean, played by Anderson, is a sex therapist/expert who tries to dissect Otis the same way she does with her clients. Despite Otis’ disapproval of his mother’s profession, he has learned many things from her and is able to talk sex education to his classmates which changes his life.
The show starts off with Otis having a private life with one friend, Eric, who is gay, played by Gatwa. The setting feels nostalgic and small, however it is modern day U.K. What makes this show so special is how diversified and real-like it depicts the school and students. Mackey’s character, Maeve, acknowledged the gift Otis has, so she and him start a clinic for sex therapy for students that need advice. This show depicts the challenges, emotions, and confusion that come with high school and puberty.
This show is a must watch right away. It is character driven with heart felt performances and feelings. If you like teenage dramas and do not mind a British show then do yourself a favor and watch this show. You will feel indulged with the characters and probably think about yourself or people you know at times of the show.
